Concord woman shares Chinese culture through teaching art

CONCORD — On a Sunday morning, the soothing sound of tai chi music wafts through Chin's Martial Arts Academy at Dana Shopping Plaza.
As about half a dozen kung fu students warm up for their session, a lively group occupying the front part of the martial arts studio is engaged in discussion about a goldfish they just painted and whether their attempt was anywhere near the work of their teacher.
Winnie Wai Lun Lai starts her Chinese brush painting class with a step-by-step instruction on how to paint a goldfish as students look on. Lai slowly demonstrates each brush stoke until the goldfish comes into form.
"She's a great teacher — she teaches stroke by stroke," said Pleasant Hill resident Yvonne Yee. "You go by some sort of order so it's easier to learn that way."
